Senator Ringuette to Sit as Independent Senator for New Brunswick

For Immediate Release

February 2nd, 2016

Senator Ringuette to Sit as Independent Senator for New Brunswick

Today, Senator Pierrette Ringuette informed the Speaker of the Senate of that she will sit as an Independent Senator for New Brunswick, effective immediately.

Senator Ringuette has released the following statement:

Canadians have been clear in their desire for a non-partisan Senate. The status quo is not acceptable.

The Senate, as an institution and Senators themselves, should be working to remove partisanship from the Chamber and with that goal in mind, I believe in taking the proactive approach and sitting as an independent.

Effective change in the Senate will need to happen from within and I believe as more Senators are appointed as independents and more current Senators move away from the hardline partisanship of the past, we will be able to make those changes.

I believe the Senate can be the strong institution of sober-second thought it was intended to be.

It is my hope for this to happen sooner, rather than later, and that is why I want to help to move it along a little faster.
